Insanity in Graveyard Keeper 2 — Causes, Cures & How to Reduce It

Quick answer: Insanity is the purple bar with the brain icon. It occupies a slice of your energy bar and lowers your energy ceiling — and eating does not refill the occupied part. It is a pure numbers penalty: there are no hallucinations, no screen distortion and no sanity minigames. The fix is sleeping while Tired, or Beer and baked goods.

What actually raises Insanity

  • Handling bodies — autopsy, digging graves, filling graves, decorating them, moving remains.
  • Long stretches at a workstation — including mundane jobs like making planks.
  • Not sleeping for too long. Once the Zz icon appears, every action generates extra Insanity.
  • Low energy — the emptier your bar, the faster Insanity piles up.
  • Swapping body parts, processing organs and collecting honey (per Prima Games' Insanity page).

How to reduce Insanity — the exact values

MethodInsanityEnergy
Sleeping while TiredLarge fixed amount — not a full wipe; re-accumulates over 2–3 nightsFull
Beer−12+52
Berry Pie−3+30 (4 Dough + 6 Berries → 4 pies)
Other baked goods−3 to −5varies

Two things matter more than the numbers:

  • Sleeping is the only real reset, and it is partial. Budget for the purple bar coming back, and plan a sleep before a long body-processing session rather than after.
  • Beer is the strongest single item for Insanity but only restores energy second to a full night — use it when you cannot afford to sleep (see the energy page).

The rule that trips everyone up

Sleep only reduces Insanity while you are Tired — the Zz icon lit in the HUD. Sleeping when you are not Tired restores energy and leaves the purple bar exactly where it is.

That means "sleep more" is not the whole answer. If you sleep on a full-Tired-free cycle, you wake with the same Insanity and less of the day left.

Perks

  • Butcher's Son can reduce Insanity — exact amount TBD.
  • Axeman, Carpenter and Blacksmith showed no reduction in testing.

How to avoid it building up

  • Do not work nights through. Body work and long crafting runs are the two biggest sources — split them across days instead of stacking them.
  • Sleep the moment Zz appears. Waiting for the bar to empty adds Insanity on every action you take in the meantime.
  • Never let energy bottom out — low energy accelerates the build-up.
  • Keep Beer or baked goods for long sessions. They buy you a few points back, but do not expect them to clear Tired — only sleep does that.

Still open (TBD)

  • The exact Insanity removed by a Tired sleep.
  • Per-source Insanity amounts for body work, workstation work and low energy.
  • The Butcher's Son reduction value.
  • Whether Insanity has a cap, and whether it affects the ending.
